So much to choose from in Southlands
There’s so much going on with Southlanders community group, people are spoilt for choice. Loads of great stuff for all age groups happening now or in the near future.
Community and free internet café
The community café at Milward Court is now open all day Monday and Tuesday. People can enjoy a great home cooked nourishing meal, meet friends and neighbours and benefit from the free internet ‘online centre’.
The Southlanders café is a registered Online Centre, a national scheme which aims to get people using the internet and gaining more confidence with computers. Other courses are available from beginners onwards to help people develop their computer skills.
Sport for young people
Next month a Neighbourhood Sports Academy will kick off. Following popular trial sessions last year the group successfully applied for money from Sussex Police to buy football equipment.
Local football teams King George United and Girls Aloud will be involved along with Quayside Youth Centre and WSCC Fire and Rescue Service.
Community garden
A big project this year will be the opening of a community garden on 4th April. The garden is on a local allotment and one of the aims will be to inspire people into growing their own food and showing just how little space it takes to grow vegetables and herbs.
It is intended that a trained horticulturist will be on hand to teach people how easy it is to garden in small spaces. The group have built raised beds to make the garden easier and more accessible to look after.
Local people can learn how to make compost. There will also be space to just sit and enjoy the outdoors, but if for those who want to get stuck in there will be loads of opportunity to get gardening. With the ideas flowing this is sure to be a groundbreaking success.
Art comes to Southlanders
An artist in residence Chris West has been appointed to bring art in all its forms to Southlands. Everyone can enjoy art and people will be encouraged to develop talent they may not even know they have.
The list goes on so to find out more about this dynamic group and what’s going on call Andy Bray on 07968515421 or e-mail andy.bray@southlanders.org.uk
